In front of certain tympanums, statues, columns, capitals or stained glass windows of Romanesque or Gothic churches, we are sometimes unable to identify the characters represented. However, there are simple means for recognizing them:

One usually finds the four evangelists in their human form, holding or writing their Gospel, but generally they take a symbolic appearance. One calls "tetramorphisis" the representation of the evangelists as winged figures, including three in animal form.
